Created as part of an effort to overhaul private label packaging for Sur La Table, these grill rub labels feature simplified typography, earthy colors informed by flavor notes, and custom icons inspired by butcher charts.
The previous packaging for this product (shown at the bottom of this page) was a two-pronged approach. A small label with the name of the rub was on the jar, and the jar was enclosed in a box-like sleeve that included photography, a recipe, and the nutrition facts. Once the product was brought home, the sleeve would be discarded and the remaining jar had very little information on it. Plus, the sleeves got beat up in distribution and shipping.
When I got the opportunity to redesign it, I wanted to remove the sleeve and incorporate a larger label, elevating the ingredients list (they’re nothing to hide!), and bringing the look and feel forward to align with the modern Sur La Table brand. In addition, I added a small round label on the lid so that no matter how you store your spices, it’s easy to grab the right one.
